New Students - Read This!

What class would you recommend for beginners?

 

If you are new to yoga or new to hot yoga, we would recommend starting with the Hot Sequence class. This class makes all of the benefits of yoga available to new students while, at the same time, challenging advanced practitioners. This is possible because the benefits of a yoga practice come from aligning your body with consciousness of the yoga poses. Advanced practitioners move deeper, new students begin to open their bodies but both are in the consciousness of the pose. Having students of all levels in this one class generates an amazing group energy that promotes the understanding of yoga.

This class is led at a deliberate pace with thorough instruction. The strength, flexibility and balance you gain by dedicating yourself to this sequence of postures will be a solid foundation that can support your yoga practice in whatever direction it leads.

 

How should I prepare for class?

 

You should be hydrated with water. Drink several glasses in the hours before class. You should also come to class on an empty stomach. Try not to eat for at least two hours before class. If that is not possible, try to limit your food intake and only have fresh fruit or vegtables. Wear lightweight, non-baggy clothing.

Arrive early to class. Ember's chill out space was designed to welcome you to come early and stay late. Leave yourself enough time to setup your mat and transition from an outside state of mind to an inside state of mind without any rush. Classes begin promptly and you will not be able to join a class after the first five minutes.

 

What do I need to bring?

 

You only need your body to practice yoga. At Ember that is even more true because we rent or sell everything you could need, from clothes, to mats, to towels, to water.

That being said, you should bring a mat if you have one. For hot classes we'd also recommend a towel or two; and maybe also a bottle of water. Ember has a water counter with reverse osmosis water filling station. We recommend bringing an empty stainless steel bottle and filling up before class. This water is as pure as water can be, healthier and less costly then water from plastic bottles.

Ember has locker rooms designed with your comfort in mind. Feel free to take a relaxing shower and prepare for the rest of your day in peace after class, bringing anything you need to do so.

 

I am not flexible, can I still practice yoga?

 

Flexibility is something yoga gives you; you don't have to be flexible to start a yoga practice. Yoga brings flexibility to the body. When you sit a lot during the work day, or when you're engaging in repetitive motion activities, you're shortening your muscles; yoga allows you to lengthen and expand, and release toxins that build up during these activities.

Increased flexibility is not yoga's only objective, nor its only benefit. The ultimate benefit of yoga - to harmoniously unite body, mind and spirit in a healthful physical practice - can be experienced regardless of whether you're able to easily touch your toes.

 

How often should I practice yoga?

 

Yoga is a journey. The postures and techniques you learn are designed to guide your body and your mind. By approaching your yoga practice with discipline, consistency and commitment the benefits will become yours naturally.

We would recommend practicing 3 to 6 times per week and have developed our monthly unlimited plans to support this type of practice. With dedication, the long term results will be yours. In the meantime, you will enjoy the ongoing natural yoga highs and peace of mind that comes from a regular practice.

Studio Information

What is hot yoga?

 

Hot yoga is instructor led Hatha yoga classes in a heated room. Depending on the class type the temperature is set between 95o and 105o Fahrenheit (35o to 41oC). Most classes also have relative humidity set to 40%.

The heat serves several purposes. Firstly, it warms the body completely, allowing deeper expression of postures and increased flexibility. This quickly allows new students, who have not yet learned more advanced yogic breathing techniques, to achieve postures in which they achieve 100% of the benefits.

Secondly, the heat causes sweat...lots of sweat. Yoga is about purifying the body and the mind. In the hot room, students can not help but to activate an efficient channel of purification and detoxification for the body.

Most importantly, the heat tames the mind. Very quickly, the practitioner learns not to fight the heat but to accept it. As this happens, over time you learn to ignore your senses, the endless stream of thoughts they set off and the judgements your mind codes them with. Instead you learn to focus all of your concentration on a single point and find an ability to be present. Once everything else disappears you experience peace and eventually learn how to maintain that peace long after your asana practice ends.

Of course this happens in non-hot yoga styles as well! The heat here is a "prop" to help expedite your progress. As you advance your control of the mind will persist in and out of the yoga studio, hot or not. However, advanced practitioners can continue to enjoy the heat for the physical benefits.

 

Are all of the classes hot?

 

No. Ember has a hot studio and a non-hot Zen room. Ember has many traditional Hatha Raja yoga classes offered in the Zen room at normal temperature. This includes regular classes that are on the weekly schedule, as well as special classes and workshops. Classes offered include Dharma Yoga, Ashtanga yoga, Kundalini yoga and mat Pilates. Ember also has kid's yoga classes based on the Grounded Yoga program.

 

What is the difference between regular classes and workshops?

 

Ember has over 50 regular classes on our weekly schedule. These are classes led by our local, exceptional teaching staff and provide instruction in yoga to help you build a solid, complete practice.

From time to time we schedule special workshops or master classes. These are either led by our regular staff or visiting instructors. These events allow our local community to learn from distinguished teachers and gain new insights into various subjects. Generally workshops are specialized topics or themes that we feel compliment and add value to the regular curriculum we offer in our regular classes. As in other diciplines, teachers of a regular curriculum often have special interests or projects that they devote their time & energy to researching, experimenting and developing. Workshops are often the presentation of that type of detailed information.

Workshops are usually priced separately from our regular rates.

 

Do you have showers and lockers?

 

Ember has men's and women's locker rooms with multiple tiled showers, vanities and changing areas. These spaces were designed for you to take full advantage of the amenities and stay as long as you wish following your class. We have cubbies and hooks to store your personal items. Please leave your valuables at home or take them into the yoga room with you.

 

What is your "community" class?

 

At least once per week Ember will offer community class on a donation basis. The suggested donation amount is $8, but any amount at all is acceptable. You can make your donation with cash or you can charge your donation. If you have a class card you can use one of your classes as your donation or you can make your donation independent of your card. If you are a member or on a monthly unlimited plan you can attend this class without a donation.

 

Yoga Etiquette

To create a pleasant environment for your yoga practice as well as that of other practitioners, please abide by the following general yoga etiquette guidelines:

  • Arrive at least 5 to 10 minutes before class (20 minutes for new students).
  • Try to enter and leave the yoga room without disrupting the other students.
  • Do not wear perfumes; colognes; scented body lotions, oils or deodorants.
  • Leave your shoes in the hallway or locker rooms.
  • Respect the silence of the yoga room before, during and after class.
  • Turn off your cell phone when you arrive.
  • For classes in the hot studio, try to setup in a way that does not block the mirror for those already setup behind you.
  • If you tend to sweat outside of your mat, bring a towel and wipe down your area when class is over.
  • Follow the instructions of the teacher.

 

Why Guys Do Yoga?

Yoga's benefits are 100% accessible to both men and women. More and more guys are embracing yoga as they understand and experience the real world results that are accessible from a regular yoga practice.

Yoga Improves Athletic Performance
From an athletic standpoint, the benefits of yoga are well known by trainers and incorporation of yoga in sporting programs is becoming mainstream. The reasons? There are many.

Yoga can enhance performance on the field or track, reduce injuries and extend a player's career. Yoga balances the body, increases flexibility, lengthens muscles, builds incredible core strength and helps with concentration. These benefits can give a player (or whole team) an advantage in sports competition. It is also easy to understand that a player who has tight muscles, tendons and ligaments is more easily injured then a player who is loose and flexible. The more degrees of freedom you body is accustomed to moving through, the more options that are available for mitigating rough contact with another player or the ground and the more finesse a player can bring to their game.

Yoga is also an incredibly restorative practice. Many sports or athletic routines can be tough on the muscular and skeletal systems, especially the joints. The yoga postures align the body, allowing injuries to heal optimally and eliminating imbalances. Many professional athletes found, or were recommended to try, yoga following an injury. The results of the healing processes at work in a regular yoga practice are so tangible that many found that their injuries healed faster and more completely then any other options, allowing them to avoid surgery and return to the game quicker.
